Today, it has more than 2,500 designated landmarks on different listings. Each landmark is recognized by the United States government and is usually a building, city district, object, site, or structure.

New York is the state with the most landmark designations (more than 260). North Dakota is the state with the fewest designations (only six). New York City, Philadelphia, and Boston are the cities with most landmarks.
