U.S. Road Signs – Regulatory Signs

Do not pass. This sign marks the beginning of a no-passing zone. Passing signs tell you where it is safe to pass another vehicle and where you cannot. Passing areas are based on how far you can see ahead. Where it is permitted to pass, you may do so only if it is safe.

Some roadways can accommodate daily traffic demands with a reversible lane system. A steady red X means no travel is allowed in this lane in the direction you are going. A solid yellow X means you should clear the lane. A flashing yellow X means left turns are permitted. A green arrow indicates the lane is open for traffic in your direction.

This is a regulatory No Parking sign. It means that parking is not allowed at any time.

Your lane is splitting into two directions. You can turn left or go straight through.

This sign is used on multiple-lane roadways to reduce unnecessary weaving and when there is a tendency on the part of the motorist to drive in the left-hand lane (or lanes) below the normal speed of traffic.

Cars in the left lane may turn left or go straight. Cars in the center lane must go straight. Cars in the right lane must turn right. Lane-use control signs are rectangular, black-and-white signs. They show where turns are required or permitted from lanes as shown. Go only in the direction indicated for your traffic lane.

Do not enter.

The sign marks a one-way roadway with traffic coming against you. You must not enter the one-way at this point.

Remember, this is a square sign with a white horizontal line inside a red ball. The sign is not circular.

This sign means the road you are on intersects with a divided highway. You can only turn right at the first roadway, and at the second roadway, you can only turn left.

A left turn is permitted, but you must yield to oncoming traffic.

The one-way sign indicates streets or roadways where traffic may travel in one direction only. You may travel only in the direction of the arrow.
