In the 1980s, synthesizers made their way into pop music, creating synth-pop music and other electronic genres. Disco music slowly fell out of fashion, making room for the king of Pop, Michael Jackson. His 1982-album Thriller becomes the most successful album of the 80s.
The decade also saw emergence of superstars like Janet Jackson, Madonna, Prince, and Whitney Houston. Bruce Springsteen rose to icon status with his album Born in the U.S.A. In the latter half of the 1980s, teen pop experienced its first wave, with bands like New Kids on the Block.
In United States, hip-hop became the dominant cultural movement of the African American communities.
In United Kingdom and rest of Europe, the pop duo Wham! made huge success. In 1985, Bob Geldof and Midge Ure organized Live Aid, a dual-venue concert to raise funds for relief of the ongoing Ethiopian famine.
