Each U.S. state has its capital city. Even if some states have changed their capital city since becoming a state, most haven’t.
Less than half of the state capitals are the most populous city in the state, making it slightly more challenging to remember the state capital in the rest of the states.
One of the first things American schoolchildren learn when they study geography is often the names of the states and their capitals. It is not the most useful information, and many adults forget most of them later in life. So, chances are that a 5th grader is smarter than any adult regarding state capitals.
