Each U.S. state has its own capital city. Even if some states have changed their capital city since becoming a state, most of them haven’t.
Less than half of the state capitals are the most populous city in the state, making it slightly harder to remember the state capital in the rest of the states.
One of the first things American school children learn when they study geography is often the names of the state capitals. It is perhaps not the most useful information, and many adults seem to forget most of them later in life. So, chances are that a 5th grader is smarter than any adult when it comes to state capitals.
